persistence + kvetching + small dash PC = CHANGE IN ACADEME!

So I take my victories where I can get them. Here at Anonymous Big University (ABU) there is a group for new faculty members. All of the meetings thus far have been at one of the local bars. I'm all for tipping back a few with people who know who the hell Schutz is, but as a single mom that isn't going to happen for me too often. I mostly confine my beerfests to conferences, when I am not in charge of the kids.

So, every time I got an announcement, I gently mentioned that maybe something for those of us with kids, who might like to meet other academics with kids, might be good.

Fast forward six months. A new organizer for the group has just come in, and she and I are friendly. And: she sent out an inquiry email directly to the membership. Result? HUGE INTEREST in having family-friendly outings.

Yep. That's right. Being a pain in the ass? Has resulted in organizational change, even if not earthshattering, here at ABU.
